DEPARTURE TIME 1999 International Australian
band of mis-information fit it all in & play it smoothly, play it
again Aquashack, are a band that has indeed been having a good time.
A serious one too. Mere months after releasing a critically acclaimed
album in 1999 (XPress Top 5 Local Releases 1999), the three core band
members split from Fremantle WA to three corners of the globe: London,
New York and Indonesia. Shaun O'Callahan of Studio Couch captured their
farewell performance live at the Greenwich Bar in Perth, a once great
venue under His Majesty's Theatre, tracks as yet unreleased. A day later
Dono was on plane. After later mixing down Greenwich Bar live album,
time was ticking for the Squigs and Wookie's itchy feet. LONDON SOLO 2000 Bass player and vocalist Dono (aka Chris Robin) bailed to London with his Maton acoustic guitar, embarking on solo performances at leading acoustic venues (12 Bar Club, Kashmir Klub, Purple Turtle, Tatty Bogle Club, Moriarty's, Arts Cafe), played support for Australian singer songwriter legend Paul Kelly, and set up another international misfit operation in the form of Catastrophe From Outer Space (aka the CFOS Experience). First night in London was in a pub in Greenwich, UK.
NEW YORK RE-CON Drummer and backing vocalist Squigs E. Boy dis-embarked in the fastest city on earth, New York, where he discovered local jazz, international jazz, and f-trains. In addition to jamming with locals, he flew to Australia and London to play with his old band Prawns with Horns and his current band mate Dono respectively, and became a DJ and integral part of the ever-growing PulseRadio.net dance music station. Squigs hunted down squatting rights to a Greenwich Village basement rehearsal room for the unavoidable Aquashack reunion. [photo here] SURFING ODDITY Guitarist and vocalist Wookie went surfing. WORLD FLY BY 2000/1 Wookie was a catalyst to further Aquashack adventures by arriving in London after a surfing in Indonesia. This lead to Dono and Wookie fronting electro-acoustic gigs at the 12 Bar Club and Moriarty's, which also featured flute, saxophone, drums and bass (and a little drum & bass). Heading to NYC to meet Squigs, Dono soon followed, and in winter 2000/1 Aquashack were re-united! NEW YORK ADVENTURE No. 1 In the northern hemisphere winter of 2000/1, Aquashack played gigs at prominent venues, including CBGB's 313 Gallery (invited to play two nights in a row, acoustic & electric), Arlene Grocery (best sound system 2000), and Acme Underground (watch your drinks my friend). Friends, fans, other bands gear, pool hall fights, snow ball bombing, coffee boys, missed departures, kissing chairs & nipple sucking all became features of the tour. NEW YORK ADVENTURE No. 2 Northern summer - mid 2001, six months and a series of solo side tracks later, Aquashack were back in New York, their newly adopted home. It was all good - playing a regular spot at Iggy's in the Lower East Side, CBGB's and Arlene's in one night, and the support of new and old friends led to the recording of a four song demo at Manhattan studio Pink Noise. '1,2,3,4...' was engineered by Steve Shirk of Ben & Steve, and featured Brooklyn soul vocalist Sonia Scott on 'You're Beautiful'. I LOVE NEW YORK MORE THAN EVER Though two of the members returned, fate had all of Aquashack somewhere else during September 11 terrorist attacks. Squigs stuck in Vegas, Dono in London, and Wookie in Indonesia. All our friends are safe, go there - it is still an amazing city, stronger than ever. "Become your dream" - De La Vega, New York Artist HOMECOMING - TOUR IS HUMAN 2002 Australian summer 20001/2 found Aquashack on the road with soul mates Prawns with Horns, in a converted school bus (the 'Cool Bus'), complete with a tv, zappa video's, cheap german pilsner, beachside romance, big country crowds and footy in the park (go Australia!). From Mojo's in Fremantle, to Dunsborough, Esperance, Albany, and back to Mojo's for a final gig in January. LEAVING HOME Sydney is the next destination in the pursuit.
